5 Guiding Points for Success in Life

We all need guiding points for navigating life, from business interactions to family, home and friends. Chuck Surack, Sweetwater Sound, Sweet Cars and Sweet Aviation Founder (among various other entrepreneurial ventures) shared in The NIIC Ideas@Work Keynote five rules he lives by in our community and through his global companies. Here they are, summarized and expanded.

1) It’s all about the people.

Chuck’s take on the “all about the bass” song focuses on the human element of a business. People do business with people. So, don’t take to heart the well-known saying, “It’s not personal. It’s business.” When people commit to a brand or company, they are buying into a relationship. Make sure it’s a solid one.

2) Integrity.

You are either adding or taking away the credibility of your brand. As a whole, we are only as good as our best, or worst, employee. One bad apple can spoil the bunch. Surround yourself with people who have similar principles.

3) Passion.

If you don’t have passion for what you do, if it doesn’t consume you, you will never achieve your best. Passion will help you push through the hard times, and help you get out of bed in the morning. We make time for what’s most important to us. Without passion, it’s easier to make an excuse.

4) Give back.

It is always possible to help others who are less fortunate. Every little bit counts. Helping others is good for your health and psyche. You will receive far more than you give.

5) Always, always do the right thing.

As an entrepreneur especially, decision fatigue can zap your energy. One way to fast track decision making is by following this simple rule: Doing the right thing is always the right choice. Make your own choice. Think about the Robert Frost poem, The Road Not Taken. The proverbial fork in the road. The right thing for you may be a more difficult path. It could “make all the difference.”
